Names of 5 candidates to fill 2 Douglas County judicial positions forwarded to governor

The Seventh Judicial District Nominating Commission on Wednesday announced five candidates to possibly fill two district judicial positions in Douglas County.

The commission conducted open interviews all day, spending 20-30 minutes with each candidate, followed by executive sessions where the commission discussed the interviewees. The names will be submitted to Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, who will have 60 days to make her selections to fill the positions. The names were announced at the end of the public interview process by Kansas Supreme Court Justice Eric Rosen.

The candidates are:

• Carl Folsom III, of Lawrence, an assistant federal public defender with the Federal Public Defender Office in Topeka.

• Jessica Glendening, of Lawrence, a deputy defender with the Third Judicial District Public Defender’s Office in Topeka.

• Judge Blake Glover, who serves in the Douglas County Pro Tem Division, of Baldwin City.

• Judge Paul Klepper, who serves in the Douglas County District Court Juvenile Division, of Lawrence.

• Catherine Theisen, of Lawrence, an attorney with Barber Emerson LC in Lawrence.

The commission is made up of three lawyers, Elizabeth Cateforis, Wesley Smith and Daniel Watkins; and three nonlawyers, Elina Alterman, Stephanie Davis and Lisa Harris-Frydman, all of Lawrence. The commission is chaired by Rosen, who does not vote on nominees.
