Bridge over Wakarusa River to close Monday for monthslong rehabilitation project

The bridge carrying East 1400 Road over the Wakarusa River will be closed for a rehabilitation project starting Monday, according to a news release from Douglas County.

The bridge is the old Louisiana Street alignment, about 3/4 of a mile north of North 1100 Road, according to the release. The work is expected to last through May 30.

No signed detour will be provided, and the bridge will be closed to all traffic. U.S. Highway 59, 1 mile west of the project, and Route 1055/East 1500 Road, 1 mile east of the project, are alternate routes, according to the release.

County commissioners awarded the project to Wildcat Construction, the low bidder at $306,350. Funding comes from the county’s capital improvement program, according to the release.

“The project will rehabilitate the abutments, repair areas of deteriorated concrete and provide an epoxy overlay on the deck, add concrete approach slabs, and replace substandard guardrails on the south approach roadway,” the county said in the release. “Abutment rehabilitation includes removing deteriorated bearings at the north abutment and casting the steel girders into the abutment.”
