Lawrence City Commissioner Amber Sellers now has another leadership role with the National League of Cities — a seat on a special council that represents university towns.
The City of Lawrence announced in a news release Tuesday that Sellers had been appointed to NLC’s University Communities Council for a one-year term. NLC is an advocacy group dedicated to helping local governments and their leaders, and the University Communities Council encourages elected officials from college towns similar to Lawrence to network and share ideas.
“Representing Lawrence on the University Communities Council ensures our community has a seat at the national table,” Sellers said in the news release. “The challenges and opportunities of a university community are unique, and this Council gives us the ability to shape solutions, share best practices, and bring resources home that directly strengthen our local economy and quality of life.”
According to NLC’s website, the University Communities Council meets in person at two NLC events, the Congressional City Conference and the City Summit. The former will take place in March, and the latter will be in November.
This is not the only NLC-related leadership assignment that Sellers has. She also serves as the first vice president of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials, which is a sub-group of the National League of Cities and helps plan programming at NLC conferences and events.
