Crews work on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2026, to prepare a site where a new bus shelter will be installed on the northeast corner of Eighth and Vermont streets.
Construction crews near the intersection of Eighth and Vermont streets are preparing to install a new metal bus shelter there, the city said Wednesday.
In a social media post, the city said the bus stop at the northeast corner of Eighth and Vermont was being upgraded to include a “more durable” shelter ahead of the World Cup. There hasn’t been a bus shelter there before, but shelters are located just to the north on the same block, across the street from the Lawrence Public Library.
On Wednesday afternoon, crews had demolished the small brick wall outside of the city parking lot at Eighth and Vermont to make way for the new shelter.
The metal shelters are in use in other parts of the city, but they’re new on Vermont Street. Other shelters in the downtown area, including the other ones on Vermont, are in a different style with transparent sides.
Through the end of work hours on Thursday, the sidewalk and some of the parking in the adjacent lot will be closed to allow crews to work. Installation work will continue next week, but the impact on parking and pedestrians then is expected to be minimal, the city said.
