The City of Lawrence announced a portion of 19th Street will be closed for much of April as part of a stormwater project.
Starting Monday, April 6, the eastbound portion of 19th Street will be closed to traffic between Massachusetts Street and Barker Avenue to allow for the removal and replacement of two stormwater structures, according to Michael Leos, a communications specialist for the city’s Municipal Services and Operations department.
Along with replacing the stormwater boxes, Leos said the city crews will replace the existing clay pipes connecting the structures with reinforced concrete pipe. That upgrade will allow for easier future pipe replacement for upcoming construction projects, according to Leos, and replacing the aging clay pipes “will improve the durability and reliability of the stormwater system” in the area.
Drivers traveling east on 19th Street will be detoured to 23rd Street during the construction work. Leos said the city anticipates the work to be completed by April 27, pending weather or other delays.
