Voters choose new leaders in Baldwin City, Eudora city races; incumbents roll to victory in Eudora school board
Lecompton mayor wins re-election
Two Douglas County communities will have new leaders after voters delivered big victories to challengers in Tuesday’s elections.
Both Baldwin City and Eudora’s mayors lost re-election bids on Tuesday.
In Baldwin City, incumbent Casey Simoneau lost to challenger Gerald “Gerry” Cullumber by 95 votes in the race to serve as mayor of the city of about 5,000 people in southern Douglas County.
In Eudora, longtime city commissioner Tim Reazin lost his re-election bid. Eudora — a community of about 6,500 in eastern Douglas County — does not directly elect its mayor, but rather allows the City Commission to choose the mayor from among the commission’s members. Reazin is Eudora’s current mayor, and has held the mayoral position for multiple terms.
Two political newcomers instead won the two open seats on the Eudora City Commission. Jason Musick and Grant High posted vote totals that more than doubled the other two candidates in the field.
Incumbents for the Eudora school board, however, rolled to victory on Tuesday. Incumbents Joe Hurla and Heather Whalen took the top two spots, while Tony Barron won the third open seat by about 170 votes.
