The City of Lawrence on Monday announced the departure of its director of transit and parking.
Adam Weigel, whom a news release described as an instrumental force in modernizing and expanding transit services for Lawrence residents, joined the city in March 2020.
“Under Weigel’s leadership, the City’s transit system has undergone transformative improvements to provide a more accessible, convenient, and rider-focused experience for all members of the community,” the release said.
During Weigel’s tenure, the Transit Department completed the new Central Station, 2315 Bob Billings Parkway, and made numerous improvements to bus stops and route redesign and information across Lawrence, including introducing real-time bus information through the Google and Transit apps. The launch of micro transit services during overnight hours and on Sundays has further expanded access to public transportation across Lawrence. The most significant technological advancement was focused on sustainable transportation, with 11 electric buses awarded to the City’s fleet, with seven already on the road, the release said.
Weigel was also a champion of fare-free service, which was implemented for 2023, 2024, and 2025, making public transit accessible to everyone in the community.
“Adam led Lawrence Transit and Parking through extreme challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and accomplished great outcomes, like the introduction of 11 electric buses and the completion of Central Station. He is a rising star in the public transportation profession and I’m grateful for his contributions to our community, Brandon McGuire, assistant city manager, said in the release.
The city’s release did not say when Weigel would depart or where he was going.
Felice Lavergne will assume the role of interim director until a new director is identified.
