City of Lawrence closes lower level of New Hampshire Street parking garage; parking in other levels to be free this week

The City of Lawrence has closed the lower level of the New Hampshire Street parking garage until further notice.

An early-morning fire in the alley behind the garage activated the automatic sprinkler system on the lower level of the garage; now, the system on the lower level is frozen and out of service due to the cold, according to a news release Monday from the city.

The city is contacting anyone currently parked on the lower level of the garage and asking them to move their vehicle to any other level as soon as possible due to safety concerns. The fire protection systems for the other floors of the parking garage are working, the release said.

Parking in the New Hampshire Street garage will be free for the remainder of the week.
