The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission unanimously voted to find a proposed $300 million development project around KU’s football stadium meets the city’s goals for development.

The commissioners voted Monday that the second phase of KU’s Gateway project, which would add a 162-room hotel, 443 beds of student housing, 43,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and office space and approximately 1,000 parking spaces next to the stadium, aligns with the Plan 2040 comprehensive plan.

Because the proposed project is on KU property, the commission could not weigh in on if it adheres to the land development code, and were only asked about its fit with the city’s goals.

KU officials are seeking a variety of financial incentives, including creating a STAR Bond district and a tax increment financing district, to finish the project, as the Journal-World reported. City commissioners are expected to vote on whether or not to award those incentives later this year.
