Kansas Rep. Christina Haswood announced her intention to run for the Kansas Senate in District 2 Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024.

State Rep. Christina Haswood on Wednesday announced her intention to run for the Kansas Senate in District 2 in this year’s election.

Haswood, D-Lawrence, has represented Lawrence in the Kansas House since 2020. She currently serves on the House committees on Taxation, Health and Human Services and Federal and State Affairs and the Joint Committee on State and Tribal Relations. Haswood was also selected by her colleagues to serve as policy chair for the House Democratic caucus after winning reelection in 2022.

“Today, I am formally launching my campaign to represent the 2nd District in the Kansas Senate,” Haswood said in a news release. “Conversations with constituents, family and supporters over the past several months have highlighted the need for my skillset, passion and perspective in the Kansas Senate. My identity as a young, Native woman who has experienced poverty and knows what it’s like to live paycheck to paycheck is reflective of the lived experience of so many residents in District 2; it’s our time to have a fresh voice in the Senate chamber.”

All of the state’s Senate and House of Representatives seats are up for election in 2024. In Senate District 2, longtime Democratic state Sen. Marci Francisco is running for reelection, having filed in January, and has served in the Legislature for nearly two decades. The district covers a large swath of Lawrence.
