Story updated at 4:27 p.m. Saturday, June 10:

A dedication ceremony scheduled for later today for the historical marker that tells the story of Margaret “Sis” Vinegar, a 14-year-old Black girl imprisoned after her 1882 rape, will move indoors because of inclement weather.

Organizer Kerry Altenbernd said in an email that the ceremony will now be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St. It was originally set to take place near the marker site at the northwest corner of Eighth and Kentucky streets, which is near the former location of the courthouse where Margaret’s trial took place.
