Lawrence woman originally charged with murder pleads guilty to involuntary manslaughter in crash that killed bicyclist

Kodi Rae Crane is pictured at a preliminary hearing on Jan. 17, 2023. Crane is charged with 2nd-degree murder in connection with a car crash that killed 50-year-old Rachel Snow, of Lawrence.

A Lawrence woman accused of killing a bicyclist in a car crash in 2021 pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter on Tuesday in Douglas County District Court as part of a plea agreement.

Kodi Rae Crane, 41, was originally charged with second-degree murder in the death of 50-year-old Rachel Snow, as the Journal-World previously reported, and before the plea deal was reached, she had been scheduled to stand trial this summer.

On Aug. 4, 2021, Snow was either riding or pushing a bike at 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of 15th Street and Haskell Avenue when she was struck by a vehicle that was eastbound on 15th Street. At the time, police said Snow was pronounced dead at the scene. At a court appearance for Crane earlier this year, Senior Assistant District Attorney David Greenwald alleged that Crane had run the stop sign at the intersection and had hit Snow, and he said that tests showed that Crane had barbiturates in her system at the time of the accident.

With the involuntary manslaughter conviction, Crane could face a prison sentence of anywhere from two years and seven months to just over 11 years under the state sentencing guidelines. Crane’s attorney is requesting a departure from the guidelines in favor of a lighter sentence. Crane will also be required to register as a violent offender for 15 years, according to a news release from the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.

Judge Amy Hanley ordered a pre-sentencing investigation and scheduled Crane’s sentencing for Sept. 1.
