The City of Lawrence has hired a new director of communications after a monthslong search.

Cori Wallace, who last served as engagement director at Kansas City, Missouri, nonprofit Della Lamb Community Services, will join the City of Lawrence as director of communications and community relations starting Monday, according to a news release from the city.

Wallace’s hire concludes a search that’s been in progress since her predecessor, Porter Arneill, transitioned to a role focused more on arts and culture under the city’s Parks and Recreation Department back in early February. Since then, Laura McCabe with the Lawrence Police Department has been handling the city’s communications in an interim capacity.

“I am excited to serve the City of Lawrence and be a part of the team working to make Lawrence a place where all can enjoy life and feel at home,” Wallace said in the release. “The core mission, vision and values of our city speak directly to how communications and community engagement are integral to supporting our residents.”

Along with her previous role at Della Lamb Community Services, Wallace has previously led communications, event and engagement efforts at various local, regional and national nonprofit organizations. That includes the March of Dimes, the Rose Brooks Center and the Miss America Organization.

According to the release, Wallace is focused on “building a positive affinity and trust with Lawrence community stakeholders” and ensuring collaboration when addressing key issues and how they impact the community.

“Cori has a deep understanding of the importance of communication in building strong relationships and creating a positive community environment,” City Manager Craig Owens said in the release. “She really seems to understand the importance of trust as we build community.”
