Snow falls in downtown Lawrence on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2023.

Light snow that began Tuesday morning in the Lawrence area is expected to continue into the evening hours, and a winter weather advisory is in effect until midnight, according to the National Weather Service.

Nathan Griesemer, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Topeka, said the Lawrence area could expect 1 to 2 inches of snowfall on Tuesday, and that the snow should stop by the early morning hours Wednesday.

Griesemer said that snow accumulation wouldn’t affect travel too much: “The good news is, we’re not seeing too much accumulation on the roads.” But he also said there were wind gusts of 15 to 20 miles per hour, and that the blowing snow could reduce visibility to less than a quarter of a mile.

In addition, as temperatures drop overnight, Griesemer said roadways could become slick.

“Colder air is moving in from north-central Kansas that could potentially cause freezing road conditions as the sun goes down,” he said. He advised drivers to “slow down and take their time,” especially if they’re traveling at night.

The forecast calls for drier conditions for the rest of the week and into the new year, Griesemer said, with highs in the upper 30s and low 40s.
