The Haskell Indian Nations University greenhouse and Native Lands Restoration Collaborative are partnering to host an event this weekend for community members to imagine ways to make the Haskell Wetlands more accessible.

The community visioning session is slated to take place Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St. It’ll also be viewable via Zoom.

A social media post about the event notes that the wetlands have become “severely overgrown and nearly inaccessible” in the seven or so years since the South Lawrence Trafficway was completed. The greenhouse and Native Lands are looking to find ways to change that through actions like installing boardwalks and trail systems, which would allow more accessibility for research, restoration, recreation and sustainable harvesting.

“This sacred landscape deserves the utmost respect, as she has continued to provide for the local community despite being mistreated by many humans for over 100 years,” another social media post from the Haskell greenhouse reads.

That post also notes that Saturday’s event won’t be the final visioning event for the wetlands, and another one might take place during Haskell’s spring semester.
