All invited to women’s march and rally set for Sunday in downtown Lawrence
Local organizers, in conjunction with Women’s March D.C., will participate in a rally on Sunday at South Park in downtown Lawrence.
The event, which is scheduled about a month ahead of the midterm elections, will include speakers, informational tables and voter registration information. The rally will be followed by a march on Massachusetts Street.
Lead organizer Jessica Greeve said the rally aims to go beyond supporting Women’s March D.C., which supports electing more women and pro-choice candidates around the country, and also aims to draw awareness to local LGBTQIA issues and lift up those and other marginalized communities. Greeve, who uses she/they pronouns, said attendees will have the opportunity to make remarks if they would like.
“I really want to have an opportunity for people to be able to share their stories as well, and share why this is so important to them,” Greeve said. “I really want the community to be involved in all of this.”
Greeve said that students from the Gardner/Edgerton school district — where restrictive rules regarding bathroom use and pronouns have been proposed — have also been invited to attend and speak at the rally.
Greeve said while the event is in solidarity with the Women’s March and those who have recently lost reproductive rights in other states, it hopes to highlight the Nov. 8 election and the importance of voting for everyone.
“Our march and rally is open to anybody,” Greeve said. “We really want to emphasize that this is everybody’s issue at this point and to go out and vote.”
Organizations that will be present at the event include the League of Women Voters and the Douglas County Democratic Party, among others. The rally and march is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday at South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St. More information about the event and a link for volunteering is available on the event’s Facebook page.
