A fire at a former Eudora church caused “extensive” damage to the unoccupied building, Eudora Assistant Fire Chief Chris Hull said Sunday.
Flames whipped by the day’s strong winds caused considerable damage to the second and third floors of the vacant building at the corner of Seventh and Church streets, which was once home to the Eudora United Methodist Church, Hull said. Firefighters battled the blaze for about 90 minutes after passersby reported the fire at 12:38 p.m. Sunday, he said.
“I’ve been told there’s extensive damage to the second and third floors,” he said. “We also had to cut holes in the roof for ventilation. They say it still appears structurally sound inside, so that’s a positive. The important thing is nobody was injured.”
It is not yet known where or how the fire started, nor has a damage estimate been developed, Hull said. An investigator from the State Fire Marshal’s Office was expected to arrive on the scene Sunday afternoon.
Units from the Baldwin City Fire Department, Consolidated Fire District No. 1 and the Northwest Johnson County Consolidated Fire District helped with the fire, Hull said.
