A power outage at City Hall has caused the city to reschedule a meeting about proposed changes to the structure of city government.

The meeting, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday night, has been rescheduled for next Tuesday, May 31, at 6 p.m., according to a city news release. Those who have registered for the Zoom meeting do not need to re-register, as the same Zoom registration link will be used for the rescheduled meeting.

The city has not reconsidered its government structure in 70 years, and the City Commission created a task force last year to study the issue. In May 2021, the task force voted unanimously to recommend that the city consider a system with a directly elected mayor and a six-member commission elected by districts. Based on feedback from the meeting and from an online survey, the commission will decide whether to put any changes on the November ballot.

More information about the proposed government restructure is available on the city’s community engagement website, lawrenceks.org/community-engagement. Resident may also complete the online survey before midnight on June 6 on the city’s Lawrence Listen’s website, lawrenceks.org/listens/surveys/.
