Smoke alarms praised after Lawrence residents flee house fire
Two Lawrence residents were able to escape a house fire Saturday morning after they were awoken by smoke alarms.
Residents of 505 Maine St. called 911 about 8 a.m. Saturday after exiting the house, which was quickly filling with smoke, Lawrence-Douglas County Interim Fire Chief Tom Fagan said in an email.
Fagan said a fire shift commander responding to a separate medical call noticed smoke coming from the house. Once emergency personnel arrived at the medical call, the shift commander went to the fire scene and used a portable fire extinguisher to control the flames in the structure’s basement. Shortly after, firefighters arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire.
No one was injured in the incident, however the house wasn’t “tenable,” Fagan said. Family Promise of Lawrence is helping the two occupants find lodging.
Smoke alarms may have saved the residents’ lives, Fagan said in the email.
“Building fires during sleeping hours are particularly dangerous,” he wrote. “Fire alarms save lives and arguably saved two lives in this fire.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation and there is yet not estimate of the damages, Fagan wrote.
