Garden City Democrat files to run for 1st District U.S. House of Representatives seat

A Democratic candidate filed Wednesday to run against incumbent U.S. Congressman Tracey Mann in Kansas’ 1st Congressional District.

James “Jimmy” Beard, of Garden City, announced his candidacy for the seat in a news release Wednesday afternoon. Mann, a Salina Republican, took office in the U.S. House of Representatives at the beginning of last year, after two-term incumbent Roger Marshall gave up the seat to run for the U.S. Senate in 2020.

Beard, an educator in Garden City, said his campaign would focus on legalizing marijuana, ending corporate bailouts and strengthening public education.

Last month, the Kansas Supreme Court upheld the congressional redistricting map slicing Lawrence out of the 2nd District and moving it to the sprawling 1st District, which covers the majority of the state, dominated by small conservative communities in central and western Kansas.
