A City of Lawrence trash truck that recently got wedged under a bridge was damaged beyond repair and must be replaced.

As part of its consent agenda Tuesday, the Lawrence City Commission approved a $440,850 budget amendment to purchase a replacement truck.

A memo to the commission states the accident resulted in “the total loss” of a commercial front-load trash truck, which has a mechanical arm in the front for emptying dumpsters. The memo states the loss of the truck will have operational impacts on commercial trash collection. The solid waste division requested the amendment, and funds to cover the truck are available in the solid waste fund.

The truck was on its way to get repairs in late May, when it got wedged under a bridge on Independence Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. City spokesperson Porter Arneill said at the time that the truck was being moved from one repair shop to another, and that the driver was unfamiliar with the route. No injuries were reported.

The bridge, which has a 12-foot clearance, is a common site for such accidents. Photos of the accident were shared widely on social media, including to the Facebook group The Bridge On Independence Ave., which is dedicated to posting photos of trucks that have been “eaten” by the bridge.
