Douglas County Commission to consider plans to expand aviation manufacturing plant near Vinland

County leaders will soon consider plans for the expansion of an airplane parts manufacturing facility near Vinland.

As part of its meeting Wednesday, the Douglas County Commission will consider approving a site plan for a new 22,000-square-foot building for McFarlane Aviation on approximately 40 acres at 680 East 1700 Road, according to a planning report.

The property is zoned for light industrial use and contains various buildings associated with McFarlane Aviation. The property is not within Lawrence’s urban growth area, the planning area of any incorporated city or the boundaries of any adopted long-range plan; however, it is adjacent to the unincorporated town of Vinland. The report states that public notice was provided to property owners within half a mile and several property owners within Vinland provided comments.

Planning staff recommends approving the site plan, but with specific conditions to address concerns raised by Vinland residents and to comply with standards. Those conditions include that the landscaping shown on the plan must be on the site before the new facility can be occupied, that certain exterior lights should only be operated when needed, that certain windows should be shaded to eliminate glare, and that construction activity shall only occur only between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The County Commission will convene at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday for its regular business meeting. The meeting will be open to the walk-in public at the county courthouse, 1100 Massachusetts St., but a link for the public to watch live online is available on the county’s website, douglascountyks.org. Residents may also call in and listen by phone by dialing 1-312-626-6799 and entering meeting ID 946 4306 3992.
