Community group to hold silent vigil for democracy to mark anniversary of Jan. 6 insurrection

A community group is inviting the public to come together next week on the one-year anniversary of the storming of the U.S. Capitol to hold a vigil in support of democracy.

The event, “A Silent Vigil for Democracy,” will mark the anniversary of the insurrection in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 6, 2021. The Lawrence-Douglas County Community Remembrance Project Coalition is organizing the event as part of its “Year of Learning” events. Those events are part of the coalition’s ongoing project to commemorate the lynching of three Black men in Lawrence in 1882.

Those who would like to participate in the vigil should meet at 7 p.m. on Jan. 6 at the gazebo in South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St. Participants should bring a candle or flashlight.
