Ecumenical Campus Ministries offering tour of midcentury homes

Ecumenical Campus Ministries Inc. will open a window on the post-war era of Dwight D. Eisenhower, tail fins and abstract expressionist art with a tour Saturday of mid-20th century homes.

ECM is offering, as a fundraiser, a tour of four homes on Owens Lane, a subdivision that Lawrence flower shop owner James Owens developed in the 1950s, said Kim Brook, ECM administrator.

The four homes in the neighborhood tour were designed by different architects but adhere to the spirit and detail of midcentury design, Brook said.

“I think these homes really exemplify in an easy residential way why the style was so popular then and why it continued to be,” she said. “You’ll be able to see why the style continues today. The homes’ furnishings are appropriate to the period. One thing that is so interesting is how midcentury design melds into other styles. The furnishing will show how it stays current.”

Homeowners will be present to answer questions about their homes, and ECM representatives will be on hand to provide information on the organization’s programming. Tickets will also be available for raffle baskets with the proceeds also supporting the ECM program, Brook said.

The homes will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Tickets for the tour can be purchased through Brook at the ECM office, 1204 Oread Ave., or at the greeters’ tent at 2145 Owens Lane on the day of the event. Tickets are $20. For more information, call Brook at 785-843-4933.
