Suspect in Playerz Sports Bar shooting to appear in court in February; separate weekend shooting appears to have been accidental

A Lawrence man accused of shooting another man outside a sports bar will appear in court early next month.

Early on Jan. 17, Lee Simmons Jr., 32, was shot outside Playerz Sports Bar, 1910 Haskell Ave., while reportedly trying to break up a fight. He was transported to a Kansas City-area hospital where he was listed in stable condition later that day.

On Saturday the suspect, Geoffrey Eugene Morrison, turned himself into the Douglas County jail on suspicion of felony aggravated battery.

Morrison, 26, was booked into the jail on a $15,000 bond. He posted bond and was released.

Morrison is scheduled to appear in Douglas County District Court for a first appearance on at 3 p.m. on Feb. 5.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Kristen Dymacek said in an email on Tuesday that Morrison’s booking photo is “not required to be disclosed under the Kansas Open Records Act.”

Second shooting

Another shooting Saturday night sent a 21-year-old man to the hospital.

Around 9:15 p.m., officers responded to a report of a shooting at a home in the 1500 block of Pinewood Drive where they found the victim lying on the ground with a towel wrapped around his calf.

Cheryl Wright Kunard, assistant to the Douglas County district attorney, said in an email that the shooting appeared to be accidental.

“We are reviewing the reports to determine if any laws were broken,” she said.

The victim, whose name has not been released, suffered a single gunshot wound to the leg, said Lawrence Police spokeswoman Kim Murphree. He was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and later transferred to a Kansas City-area hospital for treatment. A condition report was not immediately available on Tuesday.

Witnesses told police that the suspect, who is known to the victim, was holding a handgun when it fired and hit the victim, Murphree said. The handgun was recovered at the scene.

Police will not seek out the suspect unless an arrest warrant is issued by the district attorney’s office, Murphree said.
