Notebook: Frank Mason III’s toughness shows up vs. WVU

Kansas University guard Frank Mason III took an elbow to the face, delivered by West Virginia guard Tarik Phillip, in the second half of the Jayhawks’ 75-65 Tuesday victory at Allen Fieldhouse.

Phillip was assessed a technical foul.

“Frank doesn’t always play great, but there’s nobody tougher, nobody,” KU coach Bill Self said. “He’s about as competitive as anybody we’ve had here.”

Mason, who actually was called for a foul before taking the elbow, hit three of seven shots and seven of eight free throws, good for 14 points with two assists and two turnovers in 37 minutes.

Mason was asked about West Virginia’s press, which helped cause 15 KU turnovers.

“Sometimes they wear you down. They full-court deny you the whole time,” Mason said. “Sometimes they have two guys on us. They make you work the whole time. It’s tiring.”
