40 years ago: US 59 bypass hits more roadblocks
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 30, 1975:
Problems with the location of the U.S. 59 bypass were delaying a planned public location hearing and meeting with local officials about the road, highway officials said this week. John McNeal, Kansas highway engineer, told the Journal-World this morning he would not speculate on how long it would take the department to resolve problems discovered in the location study. McNeal would not comment on whether the project would be continued. A number of conflicts with the preferred routes had arisen in testimony at a hearing and in subsequent attempts to resolve those conflicts, McNeal said. Some specific issues included a conflict between one proposed route and the proposed Lawrence Municipal Airport expansion; coordination of a Kansas River bridge crossing; issues with obtaining enough fill material for some of the elevated portions; and fog problems created by Cooperative Farm Chemical Association’s water cooling towers.
