Kansas City man, 23, pleads not guilty to attempted first-degree murder, related charges

A 23-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man pleaded not guilty Friday to charges including attempted first-degree murder in connection with a January shooting at a Lawrence home.

Dashawn Clayborn is charged with attempted first-degree murder, automobile burglary, theft of a vehicle, attempting to elude police, criminal damage to property and driving while his license was suspended.

Clayborn is accused of shooting Stephen Patterson twice during a fight in the 3000 block of Steven Drive Jan. 30. Prosecutors allege that hours after the shooting, Clayborn stole a Honda Accord and led police on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash on Kansas 10 Highway near Eudora. During the pursuit, Clayborn allegedly crashed through a safety barricade.

Patterson survived the shooting and was released from Kansas University Hospital three days later.

Before entering his not guilty plea Friday, Clayborn waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

Douglas County District Judge Peggy Kittel set Clayborn’s jury trial for Aug. 31.

Clayborn will next appear in court Aug. 14 for a status hearing. He has been in the Douglas County Jail on a $100,000 bond since his January arrest.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department declined to release a copy of Clayborn’s booking photo.
