100 years ago: KU mourns death of Dean Frank O. Marvin

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 8, 1915:

  • “The flag at half-mast flying over the K. U. campus, which last week announced the death of Prof. L. L. Dyche, today tells students of the death of Professor Dyche’s friend and comrade, Dean Frank O. Marvin, who passed away Saturday night in San Diego, California. Heart trouble was the immediate cause of his death. Forty years of loyal devotion to the State’s University is the record of Dean Marvin, and to him belongs the credit not only of upbuilding one of the strongest engineering schools in the country, but of being a dominant factor in the growth of the University as well. Dean Marvin’s influence literally touched thousands of young Kansas men who came to the University. The secret of his influence lay in the personal solicitude for each individual student, and his interest was sincere…. Dean Marvin went to California about a month ago in the hope that his health would be improved by the change…. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Josephine Marvin and by a sister, Mrs. C. G. Dunlap. He was 63 years old.”
  • “David Devore, city commissioner of Globe, Arizona, formerly a resident of Kansas, is in Lawrence today visiting his sister, Mrs. M. F. Williams. Mr. Devore has been in the ranching business for forty-one years. He states that the present balmy weather that Lawrence is enjoying would be considered rather severe winter in his country where the thermometer rarely falls to the freezing point in any period of the year.”
  • “A number of art lovers were invited by Prof. W. A. Griffith yesterday to visit the art exhibit which opened for the public today. Among those present were some of the best judges of art in the city and they were well pleased with the exhibit. This is the twelfth annual exhibit of paintings to be held ad the University and everyone who has had the pleasure of attending these exhibitions in the past will surely want to come this year…. Besides the many beautiful paintings from well known artists the exhibit this year contains some of the best work of eight or ten local artists and these paintings are so good as to attract special attention.”
  • “Plans are being made in the Legislature by which the road laws of Kansas will be codified the same as they are in some of the other states in which the road laws have proved successful. The state bridge lobby is working as hard against the proposition and are sending out letters to the county commissioners to get them to work against the proposition.”
