Fire breaks out in Kansas University’s Fowler Shops

A fire broke out Tuesday afternoon on the third floor of the Fowler Shops Building, 1435 Jayhawk Blvd., on the Kansas University campus, and students were evacuated from the building.

The fire was reported in the building around 4:30 p.m. and was quickly extinguished, said Erinn Barcomb-Peterson, a university spokeswoman. No injuries were reported.

Damage was confined to two third-floor classrooms, Barcomb-Peterson said. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage was not immediately clear.

Industrial design student Parker Harrison said he was in the Art and Design Building, which is attached to Fowler Shops, when the fire alarms went off.

“The alarms were going and we all thought it was a drill,” he said. “We went outside and then we smelled smoke.”

Harrison sat on a grassy slope on the building’s south side as Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical examined the building.

“I doubt I’ll get back to my class today,” he said.

The fire is under investigation.
