25 years ago: Shoppers visit Riverfront Mall for ‘soft opening’
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 6, 1990:
Although only a small number of stores were open, hundreds of shoppers visited the Lawrence Riverfront Plaza today to see the new shopping center and to check out the prices. Fewer than 10 of the planned 50 outlet stores were open today, but many visitors said they had come in simply to tour the building and take advantage of the scenic view from the mall’s north windows. “There were more people here today than I expected,” said mall manager David Longhurst. “It’s wonderful for the people to come and shop and look at all of the stores, but we’re still far away from being ready.” About 100 people had gathered outside the plaza’s main entrance before the doors were opened at 10 a.m. Developers said that more than 70 percent of the stores, or about 40 outlets, would be open in time for the grand opening on April 28.
