25 years ago: Lawrence chosen as filming site for Michael Landon movie
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 15, 1989:
- Filming was to begin Oct. 16 in Lawrence for a two-hour television movie produced, directed, and written by actor Michael Landon, who was also to star in the film. John Warren, locations manager for “Where Pigeons Go To Die,” said during a press conference this week that the production would be based in Lawrence and filmed in Lawrence, Baldwin, Overland Park, and Vinland over a three-week period. A chief location was a private home north of Lawrence, Warren said, and interior scenes were to be shot on the soundstage of the Centron Corp., 1621 W. Ninth. Casting was expected to be completed in about two weeks, with some of the casting done locally. Warren said the biggest scene would need about 35 extras.
- At least nine fraternity and sorority houses at Kansas University had failed to meet deadlines for code compliance and were still plagued by fire hazards, according to Lawrence Fire Chief Jim McSwain today. Some of the violations were minor, such as not having installed self-closure mechanisms on doors, while others were more serious, such as lack of sprinkler systems, fire escapes, and hard-wired smoke detectors. McSwain said that each Greek organization could face fines of up to $200 per offense per day since Dec. 31, when the violations were to have been corrected.
