Acclaimed opera singer to give free concert Monday at Lied Center

Acclaimed opera singer Joyce Castle will give a free concert at 8 p.m. Monday at the Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive.

Castle, a professor of voice and university distinguished professor at Kansas University, will present her fall recital, accompanied on piano by Mark Ferrell, director of the KU Opera.

The KU Chamber Winds, led by conductor Paul Popiel, director of KU Bands, will also join Castle for the performance. No tickets are required for the event, presented by the KU School of Music, Lied Center of Kansas and Reach Out Kansas Inc.

Castle, a KU alumnus, is a globally renowned mezzo-soprano who has had an acclaimed opera career spanning four decades. Revered for her versatility as an artist, Castle’s operatic repertoire now includes nearly 140 opera roles in works by composers ranging from Bernstein to Wagner, according to a news release.
