KANSAS 82, TENNESSEE 67

Box score

? Kansas University newcomer Kelly Oubre Jr. had no points and two turnovers in five minutes of an 82-67 KU win Friday.

On the same day, fellow freshman standout Cliff Alexander had 16 points and four boards against Tennessee at the Orlando Classic.

“I think he (Alexander) would tell you he’s starting to get it. I think Kelly is going through it big-time now where he’s thinking instead of playing,” Kansas coach Bill Self said of Oubre, who was on the court when KU’s 54-45 lead dipped to a single point. “Cliff went through it big-time where he was thinking instead of playing, now he’s starting to get it. When he learns how to use his body and play to angles, he’ll be a hard guard in there for sure.”

Title talk: KU will play in the title game at noon, Central time, Sunday. As of Friday afternoon, the opponent would be either Marquette or Michigan State.

“Marquette plays ridiculously hard obviously,” Self said. “Wojo (coach Steve Wojciechowski) is getting that thing going. They had a really good win (Thursday) night (over Georgia Tech). Of course Michigan State, we’ve had a lot of battles with them over the years. Nobody’s going to play tougher. Nobody’s going to get out in transition better. Nobody’s going to rebound it better than those guys. Those are areas you have to eliminate. It’ll be a Big Ten type game though. I imagine it will be a pretty physical game. Whoever is the winner will be the one who can make plays over defense because they are not going to give you anything cheap if we play them.”

This, that: Attendance was not listed on the official box score. There appeared to be between 2,500 and 3,000 fans in the 5,000-seat arena, with KU having 90 to 95 percent of the attendees. … KU posted season-highs in free throws made (26), free-throw percentage (76.5) and rebounds (44). … KU recorded fewer steals than its opponent for the first time this season (7-3). … KU had five turnovers the first half but ended tying for its season-high with 16. … KU turned it over six times without a bucket after Alexander had back-to-back alley-oop buckets. …  With 17, 17 and 24 points in his last three games, Perry Ellis has the first three-game streak of 15-plus points in his career. … Alexander had four dunks, three off Frank Mason III lobs. … Landen Lucas made his third-consecutive start, which he used to tie his career-high with five rebounds.
