Two men, one a Haskell football player, charged with rape, sodomy of student

Two men, one a Haskell football player, from Anadarko, Okla., were charged Monday in connection with the rape of a woman in a Haskell Indian Nations University dormitory.

About 4:45 a.m. Saturday, police responded to reports of a sexual assault at the university’s campus, 155 E. Indian Ave. A woman there reported being forcibly raped by two suspects who were known to her, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, police spokesman.

A 20-year-old man was charged with three counts of rape by force or fear and one count of sodomy of the same victim on the same night. A 19-year-old man was charged with two counts of rape and one count of sodomy of the same victim on the same night.

A 2014 roster for Haskell’s football team lists the 19-year-old as a freshman player.

Haskell’s student newspaper, The Indian Leader, lists both men as students of the university, though Haskell’s executive assistant to the president Stephen Prue would not confirm whether the men were enrolled at the school.

Each charge carries a sentence of up 653 months, Douglas County Judge Pro Tem James George said Monday at the men’s first court appearance.

When asked if there was anything George should know when setting the 19-year-old’s bond, the man said he was “stressed” in the Douglas County Jail.

“I’m stressed enough as I was in college and I’m stressed enough now that I’m in here,” the 19-year-old said. “I know I’m innocent.”

George set both men’s bonds at $75,000. They remained in jail Monday and are scheduled to make their next appearance in court on Thursday.
