25 years ago: KU Commencement goes on despite rainy weather
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 22, 1989:
Morning, afternoon, and night showers didn’t succeed in dampening the spirits of Kansas University graduates today. KU’s 117th commencement exercises went on as planned in Memorial Stadium, where a crowd estimated at 25,000 listened to Chancellor Gene Budig charge the Class of 1989 to “dare to be different in years to come” and to “thoughtfully challenge the inequities of our time.” Rainstorms visited the area before and after, but not during, the ceremonies, bringing a total of .47 of an inch of moisture to Lawrence. Meanwhile, high winds and heavy rains swept across southern Kansas today, bringing hail to some communities, uprooting trees, and blowing roofs from houses. Winds of up to 74 mph were reported at Wichita’s Midcontinent Airport, and strong winds blew down power lines in towns north of Independence, Kansas.
