40 years ago: Babcock Place residents lack grocery store after Dillon’s fire
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 15, 1974:
- The Dillon supermarket at 1740 Massachusetts, recently destroyed by fire, had been a popular shopping place for older residents of Babcock Place, just to the north. With the store currently out of service, some were concerned about the shopping convenience of Babcock Place residents, but Dillon manager Keith Lucas had stepped up to the plate. A Dillon-sponsored bus was making two trips a week, Tuesdays and Fridays, taking Babcock Place shoppers to the other Dillon stores in town.
- Roberty Kampschroeder today brought in the season’s first pickup truck load of wheat to the Farmers Co-Op Association. Delivery was made to the grain elevator at 19th and Moodie Road.
