25 years ago: Lawrence student wins trip to Washington, attends inauguration

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 23, 1989:

Lawrence junior high student Brit Palmberg had recently won a trip to Washington, D.C., to attend the inauguration of President George Bush. Palmberg, 15, had won the trip with an essay “What I Would Do If I Were President.” The prize included air fare and accommodations for him and one of his parents, but the whole family ended up going on the trip; fortunately Rep. Jim Slattery had some extra inauguration tickets, so all four of the Palmbergs were able to attend the ceremony. Brit said today that his trip had included the interesting, unplanned highlight of seeing Senator and former Democratic presidential hopeful Paul Simon in an elevator. He had also toured two buildings and the major monuments. “I’ll go back, probably not for another inaugural, but to see some more,” Brit said.
