40 years ago: Intruders hold couple while home ransacked

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 22, 1974:

Armed robbers had held a retired farm couple hostage in their home for about four hours overnight while their rural home was ransacked and a small amount of cash taken. Mr. and Mrs. Homer C. Flory, both in their 70s, reported they had not been injured by the two men, who had taken a small amount of cash from Mrs. Flory’s purse, a jar containing a small coin collection, and some personal papers, many of which were later found discarded along a road north of the home. The intruders had also vandalized an antique clock and lamp and had damaged several other of the couple’s belongings. The men had cut the phone wire in the home, but Mr. Flory had spliced it together again after their departure and had been able to call officers to the scene. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was assisting the Douglas County Sheriff’s department in the investigation.
