Person killed by train in North Lawrence, police say

Lawrence police are continuing to investigate an incident in which a person was killed by a train in North Lawrence on Sunday afternoon.

About 4 p.m., Lawrence police officers were called to the train tracks at the intersection of Seventh and Maple streets on multiple reports of a pedestrian hit by a train. The victim died at the scene, said Sgt. Craig Shanks.

The train tracks and the intersection remained closed much of Sunday while police continued their investigation and the coroner made his report, Shanks said.

By about 8:30 p.m., northbound train traffic had resumed, but the southbound line remained blocked by investigators and first responders.

“At this time, the cause of the accident is not known,” police Sgt. Mark Unruh told the Journal-World late Sunday night, adding that the coroner was still attempting to identify the victim.
