Lawrence police say ‘shooting victim’ actually shot himself, arrest him for criminal possession of a firearm

Lawrence police have arrested a man who told officers that he had been shot Wednesday morning. Police discovered that the alleged shooting was actually an accidental, self-inflicted injury, Lawrence police spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said.

Demetris Deshaun Reese, 33, of Lawrence, was arrested on suspicion of criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon Wednesday after showing up at Lawrence Memorial Hospital around 3 a.m. with a gunshot wound to his leg, McKinley said.

Lawrence police were dispatched to the hospital to investigate, and Reese reportedly told officers that the shooting occurred around 1:45 a.m. in the parking lot of Allstars Gentlemen’s Club, 913 North Second St. in North Lawrence.

After questioning Reese and “several other people,” McKinley said officers determined Reese had accidentally shot himself.

Lawrence police continue to investigate the incident, McKinley said. Reese is currently in the Douglas County Jail on a $2,000 bond.
