Fix-It Chick: Replace a Delta Monitor shower cartridge

Replacing the cartridge on your Delta Monitor single handle shower faucet is a simple and affordable way to eliminate annoying leaks, drips and a host of other problems.

Step 1: Turn off the water supply to the shower. This is usually done at the home’s main shutoff valve. Test the shower to ensure the water is completely shut off before proceeding.

Step 2: Use a hex key to loosen the set screw on the side of the shower handle. Pull the handle off the cartridge stem.

Step 3: Remove the trim sleeve from the faucet assembly by pulling the sleeve straight out and off.

Step 4: Remove the bonnet nut holding the cartridge in place by turning the nut counter clockwise. If necessary, use a strap wrench or an adjustable wrench to facilitate this process. Wrap the bonnet nut with a soft cloth to protect the nut’s finish before using an adjustable wrench to loosen it.

Step 5: Remove the Delta Monitor cartridge by pulling it straight out from the wall. If the cartridge is stuck, wiggle it up and down while pulling it out. For stubborn cartridges, reattach the handle and use it to pull the cartridge outward while moving the cartridge up and down. A flat-head screwdriver can also be used to pry the cartridge away from the cartridge housing.

Step 6: Once the cartridge has been removed, use a cloth to dab away the excess water inside the cartridge housing. Use a flat-head screwdriver or a hex key to remove the seats and springs found inside the housing base. Seats appear as black rubber circles and the springs are located directly beneath them.

Step 7: Slide a new seat followed by a new spring onto the screwdriver shaft and use the shaft to help guide them back into the cartridge housing. Press the seats down until they are level with the housing.

Step 8: Install the new cartridge, making sure the side marked “hot” on the cartridge is aligned with the hot side of the faucet. The triangular tabs on either side of the cartridge should easily slide into the matching notches of the cartridge housing.

Step 9: With the cartridge seated properly, replace the bonnet nut, trim sleeve and handle.

Step 10: Turn the water supply back on and test the shower to ensure everything is working properly.
