Lawrence police, KHP searching with helicopter for ‘possible missing person’ after reported screams in Naismith Valley Park
Lawrence police and the Kansas Highway Patrol were conducting a prolonged search with a helicopter for a “possible missing person” near Naismith Valley Park late Friday night.
About 9 p.m. Friday, Douglas County dispatchers confirmed the possible missing person search in the vicinity of 27th and Arkansas streets with the Journal-World.
By 11 p.m., the helicopter-assisted search was still in progress, said Lawrence Police Sgt. Ted Bordman. According to Bordman, police initially were called to the area about 7 p.m. on reports of unidentified screams coming from the park. When they arrived, officers recovered clothing, but it was unclear whether that was connected with the incident, Bordman said. He described the recovered clothing as a child’s pink tennis shoes with “socklets” inside and a red T-shirt with the words “Methodist Bible School.”
KHP was called in to help with the aerial search, Bordman said. He said that no official reports of a specific missing person have been made and that the investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to call the police department at 832-7509.
