City softball gets league honors

When the Sunflower League’s softball coaches announced their all-league teams for 2013, city players occupied five of the 16 first-team spots.

After Free State High finished 19-4, with a trip to the state tournament, senior shortstop A’Liyah Rogers, junior first baseman Whitney Rothwell and sophomore outfielder Emily Bermel — named the league’s Newcomer of the Year — earned first-team honors.

Despite an 8-13 record for Lawrence, sophomore third baseman Morgan Byrn and sophomore utility player Kenzie Garvin also made the first-team list.

Firebirds junior pitcher Meredith Morris and sophomore outfielder Kylie Cobb and Lions junior outfielder Andrea Mills received second-team recognition.

FSHS freshman third baseman Emily Byers and junior outfielder Remington Samuels, as well as LHS junior shortstop Marly Carmona and sophomore pitcher Megan Sumonja received honorable mention.
