From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 6, 1988:

An estimated 15,800 fans had spent the evening in Allen Fieldhouse to watch Kansas All-American Danny Manning and fellow seniors Chris Piper and Archie Marshall play their last home game. The Jayhawk faithful had thrown hundreds of roses down to the court, turning the floor into a sea of red as the seniors were introduced prior tipoff of the game against Oklahoma State (won by KU 75-57). All three seniors had been on the 1986 Final Four team, and Manning was reported to be ending his career as the highest scorer in Big Eight Conference history. The KU band had dressed up for the occasion, with band director Ron McCurdy resplendent in a stunning white tuxedo and tails and the entire band in formal wear. “This is our send-off for Danny,” McCurdy explained. “We just wanted to pay a tribute to a great player who has given us a lot during the last four years.” Although they didn’t know it, KU fans were in for a NCAA tournament of heart-stopping excitement during the month to come.
