40 years ago: Vehicle chase leads police through town, KU campus

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 14, 1973:

A vehicular chase beginning at about 4 a.m. near Ninth and New York had ended later in the morning when Lawrence police arrested a man in his home. During the time the vehicle had been pursued by police, it had run over three stop signs and had driven through South Park on the west side of Massachusetts, through the grassy area and parking lot of Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium, up the hill toward the Campanile and onto Memorial Drive and then West Campus Road. Officers said at that point they had lost track of the vehicle, which was soon located in an alley behind the owner’s residence at 1017 Alabama. The driver was being held in the municipal jail, with bond set at $1,000, on 14 traffic violations including six stop sign violations, speeding, reckless driving, striking a fixed object with a moving vehicle, driving without lights in a vehicle at night, fleeing from an emergency vehicle, and three counts of damaging city property.
