KU debaters earn spot in national tournament

For the 46th straight year, a team from Kansas University has qualified for the national championship tournament for college debate.

The team of senior Melanie Campbell and sophomore Amanda Gress will represent KU at the National Debate Tournament in Ogden, Utah, from March 28 to April 2.

Campbell and Gress also made the tournament in 2012, when they were the only team of two women among all 78 teams competing.

Two other KU teams advanced to the tournament’s Sweet 16 last year, with one making it to the round of eight.

Since the first National Debate Tournament in 1947, KU teams have won five national championships and advanced to the Final Four 14 times.

Campbell and Gress qualified for the national tournament by winning five of six debates at a Midwest qualifying tournament in Edmund, Okla., this past weekend, defeating teams from Kansas State University, Wichita State University and others.
