From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 18, 1988:

• A Salina artist’s sculpture entitled “Ad Astra” was chosen this week to be the statue for the top of the State Capitol dome in Topeka. A model of the proposed statue, portraying a Kansa Indian poised to shoot an arrow into the air, had won out over other concepts that included a pioneer woman carrying a sheaf of wheat and a basket of bread. A fund-raising effort was soon to begin to raise the $100,000 to build the sculpture.
• Former presidential candidate Pat Robertson visited Lawrence this week, speaking at the annual Christmas banquet of the Lawrence chapter of the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship. About 725 people attended the banquet, at which Robertson focused on inspirational rather than political topics but stated that “God is going to clean up this nation.” Robertson was the founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network and the host of “The 700 Club.”
