KU’s Chris Gilbert takes early lead at Big 12 men’s golf

? Kansas University senior Chris Gilbert shot a first-round-best 69 to lead the field after 18 holes and sat in third place when play was suspended near the end of the second round of the Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship on Monday at Prairie Dunes Country Club.

Gilbert was the only golfer to shoot under par in the opening round of the par-70, 6,759-yard course.

KU was in third after the first round but dropped to a tie for eighth with Iowa State at 34-over with a hole to play.

Texas completed two rounds and led with a 571 (11 over), and UT’s Brandon Stone leads individuals with a 3-under 137.

“We were very focused coming into this tournament and were very prepared,” Gilbert said of the first-round performance. “We kind of went backwards a little bit there at the end, kind of got a little bad luck, but there’s 37 holes left for most of us, and I still think we can turn it around.”

Alex Gutesha shot a 1-over 71 in the first round and Kansas used scores from Paul Harris (74) and Stan Gautier (75) for the 289 total. Ryley Haas shot an 8-over 78 in the first round.

Play will resume at 11 a.m. today.
