Editorial: Great job

A group of KU student musicians have found a place in the New York spotlight.

Congratulations to the Kansas University Wind Ensemble for what reportedly was a stellar recent performance in New York City’s Carnegie Hall.

The group’s March 26 performance was the world premiere of a new work by New York composer Mohammed Fairouz. “In the Shadow of No Towers” was inspired by the events of 9/11.

New York City reviewers, who were prepared to be underwhelmed by the performance, were impressed, referring to the ensemble as “one of America’s most esteemed concert bands” and the performance as “a jewel … among this wasteland of student recitals and overdressed soloists.”

The KU group obviously were great representatives of KU and Kansas. The accolades that came their way also are a good reminder of the high quality student performances local residents can enjoy on a regular basis right here in Lawrence.
